Top 10 Greenest Car
Top 10 Greenest Cars - Vehix
1. Toyota Prius 5dr HB Base
MSRP $21,500
Invoice $20,210
The super-frugal Prius, with its Hybrid Synergy Drive, has sophisticated electric-drive componentry and a battery system that allows energy to be recovered from coasting and braking. In the Prius, a 76-horsepower, 1.5L four-cylinder Atkinson Cycle gasoline engine is paired with a 50-kilowatt electric drive motor. Together, the two produce 110 horsepower, delivered through a planetary-gear continuously variable transmission (CVT). As opposed to some other "mild hybrid" models, the Prius is a "full hybrid," meaning that the system not only turns the gasoline engine off when it's not needed; it also has the capability to run at low speeds on electric power alone for short distances. The system enables the Prius to get one of the best fuel-efficiency ratings ever-48 city, 45 highway, according to the EPA. Prius is also certified as a Super Ultra Low Emission Vehicle (SULEV) and as an Advanced Technology Partial Zero Emissions Vehicle (AT-PZEV), and may qualify for tax incentives, parking, or carpool lane privile .
2. Honda Civic 4dr Sdn
MSRP $22,600
Invoice $20,804
The 2008 Honda Civic comes as six distinct models: sedan, coupe, Si sedan, Si coupe, Hybrid sedan, and natural-gas GX sedan. The sedan and coupe both have a 1.8L i-VTEC four-cylinder engine, making 140 horsepower and 128 lb-ft of torque and bringing a fuel economy figure of 25 city, 36 highway with the optional five-speed automatic transmission. A five-speed manual is standard. The sedan and coupe meet ULEV-II emissions standard in all 50 states. The Si sedan and coupe step up to an especially high-revving 2.0L i-VTEC four-cylinder engine making 197 horsepower and 139 lb-ft of torque, paired with a six-speed manual transmission and employing a helical-type limited-slip differential to help ensure smoother power delivery in high-performance driving. The Si models also get significant upgrades, including 17-inch wheels and high-performance V-rated tires, special trim and bolstered sport seats with red stitching inside, and a rear wing and aerodynamic cladding outside.
3. Nissan Altima 4dr Sdn I4 eCVT Hybrid
MSRP $25,480
Invoice $23,881
Nissan's Altima is now available in two different body styles for 2008: a four-door sedan, or a new two-door coupe. The coupe models share mechanicals and much of their interior appointments with the sedan, but they're four inches shorter and 2.5 inches lower in profile than the sedan, with unique sheetmetal and sportier styling. Both engines offered in the Altima are among the most powerful when compared with those offered in rival midsize sedans and coupes. The standard 2.5L inline four makes 175 horsepower and 180 lb-ft of torque, while the 3.5L V6 makes 270 horsepower and 258 lb-ft. Both get variable valve timing and a dual exhaust. Either engine can be paired with a six-speed manual gearbox or Xtronic continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT). The Xtronic features a "Sport" mode that adjusts to performance-oriented driving. All Altimas come with front-wheel drive and a four-wheel fully independent suspension that's tuned for sharp handling as well as a smooth ride.
4. Toyota Camry 4dr Sdn
MSRP $25,200
Invoice $22,680
New Car Test Drive Review: Neither a rocket scientist nor a car critic is needed to figure out why the Toyota Camry has been America's best-selling car nine of the past 10 years. This mid-size sedan does just about everything well, and it's supported by Toyota's well-earned reputation for quality, reliability and value retention. Wash-and-wear, no-worries reliability is not a bad thing. Owners depend on the Camry, and they're seldom disappointed. This four-door sedan seats five in reasonable comfort, yet it's relatively compact and easy to park. It's smooth and quiet, but it can accelerate with vigor. Its cabin is attractive, functional and as refined as anything in its class. The Camry is thrilling in no respect, and no particular aspect of its performance is outstanding. Yet it's good in nearly every respect, bad in almost none, and it has a steady, set-and-forget quality that many drivers appreciate. It's pleasant to drive in all circumstances. In SE trim, with the manual transmission, it approaches fun.
5. Ford Escape FWD 4dr I4 CVT Hybrid
MSRP $27,445
Invoice $25,470
New Car Test Drive Review: The Escape Hybrid delivers essentially the same performance, with very little to give away its hybrid powertrain except improved mileage. Indeed, all Escape models, from front-wheel-drive four-cylinders to all-wheel-drive V6s to the Hybrid, have some of the best EPA mileage ratings in the class (Be sure to compare mileage ratings according to the same model year. The EPA changed its calculation formula for 2008 to reflect something closer to real-world results, which lowered the ratings for 2008 models). All, including the gas-electric Hybrid, are offered with either front- or all-wheel drive. For the most part, the Hybrid drives just like a conventional gas-only Escape. It's a well-executed package. It offers better fuel economy and lower emissions but demands little additional effort or knowledge from the driver. The Escape Hybrid ($25,075) and Hybrid 4WD ($26,825) are equipped similarly to the Limited models, but add the hybrid powertrain.
6. Toyota Yaris 3dr HB Man
MSRP $11,550
Invoice $10,856
New Car Test Drive Review: Toyota's rise in becoming the world's second largest automaker has been marked by the excellence of its luxury Lexus line and hybrid engine program, but this new, second-generation Yaris is a solid reminder that Toyota earned its way into this elevated position by building good, basic transportation. The Yaris, however, is better than just good. This replacement for the unloved Toyota Echo boasts the good looks, suave road manners, perky performance and well-tailored interior that establish new benchmarks in the entry-level game. And this will cause the increasing competition in that market many sleepless nights figuring out how to offset Toyota's deep well of talent, materials and technology. The Yaris combines the economies of an inexpensive sticker, outstanding fuel mileage and the solid integrity that underlies every Toyota vehicle.
7. Honda Fit 5dr HB Man
MSRP $13,950
Invoice $13,468
The 2008 Fit remains loyal to Honda's original vision: good cars for not a lot of cash. The base model squeezes in for just under $14,000, bringing with it a host of standard equipment, capacity, and safety features, not to mention fuel economy that is second to none. The Fit is one of the most versatile small cars on the market. Despite its diminutive exterior proportions, the car has an array of clever features that maximize interior space. The aptly named Magic Seat folds up to allow four feet of height in the second row for bicycles and the like. The Magic Seat also folds down completely flat to provide almost 42 cubic feet of cargo space. Both the driver and passenger setbacks fold flat, providing room for long items or a place to stretch out. The Fit proves that inexpensive doesn't mean cheap. Power windows, door locks, and air conditioning are standard. The Fit also packs in the safety features. Front, side, and curtain air bags are standard, as well as anti-lock brakes (ABS). For even more features,
8. Toyota Corolla 4dr Sdn Man CE
MSRP $14,405
Invoice $13,324
The 2008 Toyota Corolla comes in three different models: the base CE, sporty S, and better equipped LE. Each can be equipped with either a five-speed manual transmission or four-speed automatic. The 126-horsepower, 1.8L four-cylinder engine that powers all Corollas has variable valve timing with intelligence, which helps give it good response through the rev range without hampering fuel efficiency. With the manual transmission, the Corolla can accelerate from zero to 60 mph in just under nine seconds, according to Toyota, yet it achieves EPA fuel economy ratings of 28 mpg city, 35 mpg highway. The Corolla has a roomy interior and comfortable ride, yet a stiff structure and variable-assist rack-and-pinion steering give it a nimble feel. The back seat is split 60/40 and folds forward to expand the 13.6-cubic-foot trunk.
9. Hyundai Accent 3dr HB Man GS
MSRP $10,775
Invoice $10,540
Hyundai's entry-level Accent is certainly worth a look for anyone interested in an inexpensive people-mover. With fresh styling and the choice of either a hatchback coupe or a sedan, the Accent offers something for most buyers. The hatchback comes in either GS or SE trim, while the sedan is only available in GLS dress. All Accents are front-wheel drive and powered by a 16-valve, 1.6L inline four-cylinder putting out 110 horsepower. Each car comes standard with a five-speed manual transmission, which allows for 27 mpg city/32 mpg highway, while a four-speed automatic with overdrive is available. The GS hatchback is the barebones choice. It rides on 14-inch steel wheels, features manual mirrors, tilt steering, and a 60/40 split flat-folding rear seat. Power mirrors, keyless entry, a six-speaker CD stereo, a urethane B&M manual sport shifter, and air conditioning are optional, either on their own or as part of a Premium Package, which also adds power windows.
10. Kia Rio 4dr Sdn Man
MSRP $10,890
Invoice $10,465
New Car Test Drive Review: Rio has received Autobytel's "Editor's Choice for Most Improved New Car," and ranked highest for initial quality in the subcompact segment in the J.D. Power and Associates 2006 Initial Quality Study. Rio has also been recognized as one of the most fuel-efficient vehicles on the market by both the Environmental Protection Agency and by J.D. Power. All '07 Rios come with new shift knobs (manual and automatic), a chrome Kia logo on the steering wheel pad, and an illuminated ignition-switch surround. The SX models' 15-inch alloy wheels have been redesigned, and 16-inch rims are now available. SX models also feature new chrome accents on their instrument panel air vents. The Kia Rio sedan and five-door hatchback are powered by the same 110-hp, 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine. It's a sophisticated, modern engine, complete with dual overhead camshafts and variable valve timing.

Recycle Cans and Bottles
Aluminum Cans
More than 50% of a new aluminum can is made from recycled aluminum.
The 36 billion aluminum cans landfilled last year had a scrap value of more than $600 million. (Some day we'll be mining our landfills for the resources we've buried.)
GLASS
Americans throw away enough glass bottles and jars every two weeks to fill the 1.350-foot towers of the former World Trade Center.
Most bottles and jars contain at least 25% recycled glass.
Glass never wears out -- it can be recycled forever. We save over a ton of resources for every ton of glass recycled -- 1,330 pounds of sand, 433 pounds of soda ash, 433 pounds of limestone, and 151 pounds of feldspar.
States with bottle deposit laws have 35-40% less litter by volume. *If all the glass bottles and jars collected through recycling in the U.S. in 94 were laid end to end, they'd reach the moon and half way back to earth.
PLASTIC
Every year we make enough plastic film to shrink-wrap Texas.
Americans go through 2.5 million plastic bottles every year.
26 recycled PET bottles equals a polyester suit. 5 recycled PET bottles make enough fiberfill to stuff a ski jacket.
In 1988 we used 2 billion pounds of HDPE just to make bottles for household products. That’s about the weight of 90,000 Honda Civics.
If every American household recycled just one out of every ten HDPE bottles they used, we’d keep 200 million pounds of the plastic out of landfills every year.

NiMH are great economical power solution if used in digital camera's, MP3 players, CD players, 2 way radio's/walkie talkies, remote control cars, game boys, and photoflash equipment.
NiMH are a good economical power solution if use in toys, infant devices, and PDA's. NiMH batteries are not recommended for: remote controls and clocks - use alkaline batteries - and medical and safety devices unless they are specifically designed and recommended to use NiMH rechargeable batteries.

I purcased all of these Clorox Green Works products at CVS.
All-Purpose $3.99
Bathroom $3.49
Window $3.99
Dish soap $3.79
Mother's Review:
All-Purpose
Scent - Pleasant, almost unnotiveable
Cleaning Ability - Cleans well but surfaces take longer to dry perhaps due to ingrediants. (Green Works does not include ammonia) Compared to Lysol All-Purpose Cleaner, Lysol has a warning on the label warning that it is harmful to children and animals, Green Works does not carry this label.
Price - same/slightly higher then non-Green
Overall rating - if this product is slower to evaporate on surfaces it would be problematic in a humid climate. Prefered is quicker drying.
Glass and Surface Cleaner
Scent - Almost unnoticeable, nice since cleaning scents can be overpowering especially when using several products in the same area.
Cleaning Ablity - It takes longer to get clean, and dry the surface then Windex. First it creates a foam that you must keep wiping until it disappears. It contains no ammonia, perhaps the reason it is slower to evaporate,
Price - Same/slightly higher than non-Green counterpart.
Overall Rating - Prefer Winder; quicker.
Bathroom Cleaner
Scent - Pleasent, almost unnoticeable.
Cleaning Ability - Seems the same as non-Green products.
Price - Same/ slightly higher than non-Green.
Overall Rating - would definitely use to "help the enviroment."
Dishwashing Liquid
Scent - water lilly scent is too sweet smelling for my personal taste. It would be a good scent for liquid soap, not dish detergent.
Cleaning Ability - Same
Price - Same/similar
Overall Rating - Would use but not this specific scent.

Recycled Paper Product(s)
**All of the products I have listed here, I found at Staples, in one trip to the store. **
Loose Leaf
When I went to Staples I was looking around the notebook and notebook paper section and I found a pack of paper that is 80% sugarcane waste! I had never heard of such a thing but I bought a couple packs of 100 sheets of the 80% sugar cane waste paper and I love it. Its a little more slick then regular loos leaf but I like the feel when I'm writing on it.
Notebooks
The notebook was also manufactured using 80% sugar cane waste. When I found these on the shelves at Staples I almost didn't see them. The cover is very bland, most likely some sort of recycled card board. The pages are like those of the loose leaf, slicker then regular paper, but very nice to write on. These are great for using as a class notebook, plus they are 80% waste! Talk about limiting waste that goes into a landfill. Cost $2.49 a pop instead of $2.65 for a 'new' notebook.
Legal Pads
They are Ampad Evidence 50% Recycled, White, 5 x 8, Writing pads. Made with 50% recycled paper. I can maybe see why a CEO of a big company wants the professional looking legal pads but for everyday home and office use, why can't you use recycled legal pads? These are just as good as any 'new' type of legal pads you buy, but they are more eco-freindly. Cost 12.99 for a pack of 12 which is a little over $1.00 each!
Computer Paper
Paper Towels
I want to first say that an even better way to clean, and dry your hands is a small towel. They last much much longer then paper towels because you can just throw them into the wash and reuse them. But if you want paper towels, these are the ones to get! They are Marcal 100% recycled paper towels, 2-ply. The are 100% recylced with a mininum 60% post consumor content. You wouldn't even know they were recycled inless you saw the packageing, they work just as well as any 'new' roll of paper towels. $15.99 for a case of 12.
Pictures
'NEW' $8.99, RECYCLED $5.79
'NEW' $2.65, ECO-FREIENDLY $2.49
'NEW' $1.99, ECO-FREIENDLY $1.79

Reusable Shopping Bags
Okay I think everyone has seen these at the checkout line at assorted stores. They are the fabric shopping bags that are ment for use over and over again instead of useing those plastic bags untill you get home and then throw them out.
FACTS ABOUT PLASTIC BAGS
"Top Facts - Consumption
Each year, an estimated 500 billion to 1 trillion plastic bags are consumed worldwide. That comes out to over one million per minute. Billions end up as litter each year.
According to The Wall Street Journal, the U.S. goes through 100 billion plastic shopping bags annually. (Estimated cost to retailers is $4 billion)
Top Facts - Environmental Impact
Hundreds of thousands of sea turtles, whales and other marine mammals die every year from eating discarded plastic bags mistaken for food.
Plastic bags don't biodegrade, they photodegrade - breaking down into smaller and smaller toxic bits contaminating soil and waterways and entering the food web when animals accidentally ingest.
As part of Clean Up Australia Day, in one day nearly 500,000 plastic bags were collected.
Plastic bags are among the 12 items of debris most often found in coastal cleanups, according to the nonprofit Center for Marine Conservation. " -reusablebags.com
How long do reusable bags last?
The reusable bags I have last for a fairly long time depending on the quality. Eventually they get too beat up to use but they served a very long life by that point, and as a result less plastic bags will go to waste.
How much do they cost and how much do you save?
I've spent anywhere from $0.99 to $1.99 on reusable bags at Walgreen's and Kohls. In this case you yourself are not saving money but you are limiting waste of plastic bags that you are most likely only going to use once anyway.
Conclusion:
I think the use of reusable bags is a simple but great way for a person to limit his/or her personal waste.

CFL (Compact Fluorescent Lamp) light bulbs save money and energy
**WARNING CFL BULBS CONTAIN MERCURY! PLEASE DISPOSE OF PROPERALLY**
CFL stands for Compact Fluorescent Lamp
In the beginning of December i replaced most of the light bulbs in my house with CFL bulbs. I will eventually compare electric bills from November 2008, with regular bulbs, and December 2008, with CFLs.
"A CFL bulb uses up to 75% less energy than old-fashioned bulbs. Saves $30 in energy costs! Every bulb changed means less pollution, lower costs and reduced demand for electricity. That means cleaner, healthier air, environmental and public health benefits." - Project Porchlight
How do CFL bulbs work?
"The compact fluorescent lamp emits its efficient light through an arc of electricity that is created between two filaments. When compared to an incandescent lamp, the small amount of electricity that is used in a CFL creates radiation which emits ultraviolet light. When this light is emitted, it causes a reaction in the phosphor coating on the inside surface of the bulb. The reaction creates a bright visible light. " - www.compactfluorescentlamp.com
The way the CFL bulb is constructed, it is able to produce the same amount of light as say a 60 watt incandescent bulb using only 15 watts!
**WARNING CFL BULBS CONTAIN MERCURY! PLEASE DISPOSE OF PROPERALLY**
How long do they last?
The name brand CFL bulbs i purchased, Energy Smart 60, 15watt, 5 bulb multi pack, general purpose, say they last 8 years or 12,000 hours! The bulbs are guaranteed to last 8 years and will be replaced if they fail before then. The cheaper 15 watt Maxlite CFL claims to last 10,000 hours and has a 2 year guarantee.
How much do they cost and save?
CFLs in general are more expensive then regular incandescent light bulbs. I found cheap Maxlite 13 watt CFL bulbs at Walgreen's for $0.99 this is considerably cheap for a CFL. This CFL claims to saves $60.00 in energy cost. I picked up a 5 pack Energy Smart 15 watt bulb that cost me about 17 bucks, which rounds to be about $3.50 per CFL bulb.
Conclusion:
I think this is a great way to save you money, in the long run. CFL bulbs are very energy efficient and are super environmentally friendly, but they are expensive to replace a whole house at once. The best approach is to change a regular light bulb one at a time over a period of time.
